History The area was founded by William Bobby Gilbert in the early 1900s, when he donated land to build the rail line between Phoenix and Florence, Arizona. The town's first grocery store was established in 1912. Later, the post office was built on the east side of Gilbert Arizona. By 1915, immigrating Mormons began to populate the town. They made the first school and church in Gilbert Az. In the 1900s, because of the new rail line and the project of the construction of Roosevelt Dam, Gilbert Arizona grew exponentially. At that time, it was known as the "Hay capital" of the world.

Riparian Preserve If you enjoy nature, you'll want to visit the Riparian Preserve where some of the most fantastic bird species have been found. Be sure to go on the Autobahn Arizona Family Bird walk that happens every third Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Even if you can't make one of those lovely bird watching events, be sure to visit the park. Downtown Gilbert The downtown area has many things to do, even though it's only a few blocks wide. Here you'll find great BBQ, Mexican and Italian restaurants. It can be a great time to do some window-shopping or just take some pictures of the old western-style streets. And if you happen to be there on a Saturday morning, you can enjoy the beautiful Farmers Market located just behind the water tower.

There are picnic tables, barbecue grills, and six shaded areas for beautiful get-togethers. Besides the sports areas, there is a lovely lake stocked with fish for fishermen. For the little ones, there's an amusement area with a mini Ferris wheel and carousel. All areas are accessible to wheelchairs.
